ABOUT US

DIGIVATIONS™' is a NASA award winning STEM+ARTS+MOVEMENT creative technology learning lab founded by principals Dr. Anne Deane Berman and Dr. Steven Lee Berman which offers interdisciplinary programs ranging from novice to advanced education in fields of science, technology, engineering, math, the creative arts and humanities with a special emphasis on music and digital storytelling. We consult with a wide range of colleagues (digital media professionals, scientific researchers, educators, and athletes, among others) in planning and implementation of our programs.

Since 2011, DIGIVATIONS Co-Founders have taught over 1,500 K-12 students and more than 400 informal and formal educators throughout British Columbia, Washington, Alaska and California. We have received three NASA grants for our unique curriculum and proven three-step educational methodology which have been used to teach science and innovation programs internationally.  For more than 20 years, they have been celebrated educators and international speakers and judges for K-12 and university programs with an emphasis on advanced/gifted and special needs/autistic.

Together, Anne and Steven Berman combine over 50 years of engineering, science, technology, artistic, academic, legal and business experience in supporting DIGIVATIONS Education Ventures and the DIGIVATIONS INSTITUTE.  Steven Lee Berman holds a BS, magna cum laude, in Materials Science/Ceramic Science Engineering (with an emphasis in Computation) from Rutgers College of Engineering and a Juris Doctorate degree from Yeshiva University's Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law (emphasis in intellectual property).  Anne Deane Berman holds a BM from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and a MA/PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara in music composition with an emphasis on music technology.   Anne is an internationally performed composer whose music and works have been performed in more than 75 venues in over a dozen countries (Carnegie Hall, Goteborg Museum of Art: Sweden - see annedeaneberman.com). They have collaborated on creating, producing and performing on a global scale, experiential interactive installations which blend art and technology to support thematic STEM+ARTS+MOVEMENT learning and teaching.  Steve originally created DIGIVATIONS to sustain Anne’s and his work in developing and directing a University of California-systemwide industry/university/state matching grants research program which generated a net technology commercialization impact of $300 million in the areas of alternative energy, distributed computing, precision agriculture, security, space exploration, 21st Century medicine, and intelligent transportation systems and robotics, among others.

Anne and Steve also have more then 30 years of collective teaching and research experience at the K-12 and university levels. They are former faculty at UCLA, UCSB, ISU in the US, as well as UBC and GNWC, BC, Canada based institutions, among others. Anne and Steve are LEGO® Education Academy Teacher Trainers.  Steve has created and lectured at many multidisciplinary international forums in collaboration with industry, university and government agency stakeholders which address STEM thematic issues most notably in California, and throughout the US and BC, Canada, specifically as founder of the Transformative Media Consortium and the non-profit DIGIVATIONS INSTITUTE, created to bring our curriculum to under resourced communities.  Steve has also created collaborations among provinces and states, notably the California-BC, Canada Collaborative that served as the foundation for the more formalized Canada-California Strategic Innovation Partnership.

We mentor college students and teachers who are specially trained to teach our unique curriculum.

DIGIVATIONS addresses educational/academic, industry and government stakeholders' needs in creative technologies and multidisciplinary scientific and engineering fields. Our mission includes cultivating next generation innovators through the application of hands on STEM in K-12 enrichment through advanced university education and corporate training utilizing engaging approaches. We offer professional development in robotics, science, and music where storytelling contextualizes an active learning experience. We offer programs throughout British Columbia, Alaska, California and the Pacific Northwest providing real world solutions (alternative energy). A core focus is individuals' dynamic understanding and acquisition of STEM foundational concepts exceeding Provincial and States' standards. We produce international Innovation Summits with global thought leaders, intellectual property strategists and decision makers to catalyze productive transformation and adaptation in the Innovation Pipeline.

DIGIVATIONS offers a unique curriculum. Students’ bridge knowledge acquired using a three-step proven methodology and by engaging multiple intelligences.  Exposure to STEM through the Arts and Movement provides the possibility for authentic learning allowing students to access STEM material with confidence while supporting mental and physical development. Students are encouraged to apply their unique talents to group projects and to be motivated by a collective mission. This approach fosters innovation and multidimensional thinking, ultimately enabling solutions to local, regional and national challenges.

Our multidisciplinary curriculum components are applied to each class or workshop that we teach: (1) designing and delivering a relevant and rigorous STEM-based responsive classroom discussion contextualized with current events related to core themes including alternative energy, engineering design, life sciences, sustainability, transportation and intelligent infrastructure, among others, (2) creative engagement where students participate in experiential learning of STEM topics through narrative including storyboarding, movie making, dramatizations, music and other artistic methods and (3) hands on building using a diverse array of materials, resources and educational products including LEGO Robotics, Simple Machines and Serious Play, as well as variuos science kits such as straw and water rockets, structures, snap circuits and solar cars, to name a few.
